Being Vegetarian – What’s So Good About It? [Diet / Nutrition]

Living a healthy lifestyle is indeed anyone’s dream. These days, with obesity and coronary problems on the rise, scores of people are looking high and low to find ways to keep themselves healthy. A popular saying that goes around is “You are what you eat”. If we look at this from a nutrition point of view, you are in fact what you eat – at least your physical body is. The fact is, when we try to live a better lifestyle, it is of the utmost importance for us to look at our diet.  Vegetarianism is rapidly becoming a popular trend nowadays. Over the last century, the number of people practicing a vegetarian diet has increased ten folds. Besides better education and awareness on vegetarianism, the fact the people today have a choice also influences this sharp rise in the number of vegetarians. But then, many are still asking the question; why would anyone stop eating meat? What’s so good about a vegetarian diet?

Vegetarians claim that their practice of avoiding all meats can actually extend their lifespan. This is due to the fact that eating meat causes the body’s metabolism to slow down. Vegetarians on the other hand have higher metabolism rates –  this means that they are healthier and remain healthy even as their age increases. Of course, this claim is not baseless and is supported by a study on resting metabolic rates (RMR) that found out that the RMR of vegetarians are higher than that of non vegetarians by an average of 11%. A high metabolic rate is very important in order to minimize the risk obesity, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Many people opt to become vegetarian in order to avoid the chemicals that are injected into animals in order to stimulate their growth. In fact, some of the chemicals can be very dangerous to humans – arsenic is an example of this. The FDA states that the legal level of arsenic in poultry and meat product is 0.55 parts per million. However, it was found out that at least 16% of the poultry supply in America is contaminated with high levels of arsenic. All this only increase your chance to develop cancer and other health problems.

For men, being vegetarian can help them to combat impotence. One of the causes for impotency is blocked arteries which happen due to fat deposition inside the artery. A lot of the dangerous fat that enters out body comes from meat. Foods like bacon, chicken fingers and cheeseburgers have even higher contents of fat. When the arteries in the penis region are clogged with fat, you might find it hard to keep it erected. Besides affecting your health, your relationship will be affected as well as your ‘winky’ can’t do its job.

Another obvious benefit of a vegetarian diet is the fact that this type of eating habit has low cholesterol levels associated to it. Meat is the only source of cholesterol and cholesterol is the main reason for coronary diseases. Studies indicate that no vegetable has cholesterol content. Thus, practicing a vegetarian diet can significantly reduce your cholesterol levels.

With the various health benefits that vegetarianism brings, it is no wonder why many choose to become one. In addition to the benefits mentioned above, this kind of diet can also help you save money, handle menopause problems and also the environment.
