Fit Frog Adventures guides and coordinates hikes and snowshoe outings that lead you over hill and down dale in Calgary, the Rocky Mountains, the Whaleback and the Badlands. Every season a new calendar of outdoor events is created. Why hike with us?
Well Researched Routes
Lori, the owner and your guide for most outings, has guided over 1000 off-the-beaten path hikes in the City of Calgary and over 400 Rocky Mountain hikes since starting Fit Frog in the spring of 1997. Check out her book, Calgary's Best Hikes and Walks for route maps, kid-friendly trails, historical hikes, fitness routes and how to dress for year-round outdoor activity. Her book Calgary's Best Bike Rides and Trails leads you on all new routes following Calgary's extensive pathway system. These outings are perfect for biking longer distances on your own or with the kids, running, roller blading or for longer urban treks.
Fit Frog guides are upbeat, fun and extremely professional. They have lots of experience leading groups in the great outdoors. All guides are certified in Wilderness First Aid. Fit Frog Adventures has the required parks permits to guide you in the Alberta Rockies.
The full day mountain hikes, snowshoe and ski days are tested and rated before you hit the trails with Fit Frog. The rating system categorizes hikes into four levels of difficulty based on the terrain, elevation gain and total distance of the hike. Most of our hikes and winter outings take place in the rocky mountains of Kananaskis Country but we also hike in the Whaleback to the south, the Badlands to the east, and on the Prairie Grasslands.
Education
Learn about footwear, packs, knee health and walking sticks. Get off the beaten path and onto uneven, earthy terrain to improve your balance and core stability. We'll show you hill climbing techniques that help you pace for pleasure and endurance. Yes, hills can be fun!
Bears and bugs; tracks and scat! When you join Fit Frog on mountain hikes you learn to be aware of your environment. Let's just say that a pile of scat (poop, no laughing) will become quite interesting when you hike with Fit Frog!!
Training
The best way to train for hiking is to get off the pavement and onto some uneven earthy terrain. A new trend in walking is called Nordic Walking. This is simply walking with poles and at Fit Frog, we have been using poles while hiking since our start-up. Using poles while hiking helps prevent knee injuries, it increases your upper body workout and improves stability. So join us for some fitness treks through the city. Backpack in tow and hiking poles in hand, you'll be ready for Kananaskis day treks and multi-day West Coast Trail adventures.
Family Hiking
Hiking with your kids is a great way to stay fit and get your whole family active in the outdoors. Call Lori (229-4299) to learn how to bring your kids along for free and how to prepare for hiking with baby and older children.
Flexibility
Urban Hike programs run up to three times per week and full day hikes or snowshoe days happen every weekend. You may hit the trails three times one week and none the next. It's up to you!
Reliability
You can depend on Fit Frog to hit the trails as per the schedule no matter what the weather. We'll change our planned route if safety demands it but you'll never have to worry about a cancellation!
Convenience
You leave work and hit the trails. Urban Hike programs take place at 6:15 - 7:45 pm on a variety of weeknights and on some weekend and weekday morning walks at 9:00-10:30 am. Our full day Rocky Mountain hikes and snowshoe days start bright and early on some Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays! You won't have to worry about wasting your day off by sleeping in. We leave the city at 8:00 am sharp on all full day hikes and snowshoe days.
